Benin Commission Members Publish Their Final Report
The Benin NCDI Poverty Commission has officially published its final Phase 1 report.
The Commission held its inaugural meeting—a virtual one—in February 2021, with members representing the Ministry of Health, the Ministry of Development, Parliament, and a range of clinical, academic, and civil society organizations.
In August 2023, Commission members gathered for a three-day workshop to conduct an initial situation analysis, establish a framework for outlining the prioritization of needs, and identify appropriate interventions. Commission members noted that, according to the latest World Health Organization figures, noncommunicable diseases caused 39 percent of all deaths in the country, with cardiovascular diseases, injuries, cancer, diabetes, and chronic respiratory diseases as the greatest contributors to the mortality rate.
Commission co-chairs are Dr. Ali Imorou Bah Chabi, secretary general of the Benin Ministry of Health, and Prof. Dismand Houinato, president of the Benin NCD Alliance.
